Skates, Blades, & Boards

Skating across the University of Oregon campus can be a great way to get around. Riding safely and being courteous to pedestrians are important for the well-being of all. While the university encourages the use of these convenient sources of transportation, we understand that they are also intended for recreational purposes. With this in mind, we want to remind riders to respect the heavy pedestrian traffic on campus. Please remember, stunting and acrobatic maneuvers are prohibited on university property. There are several facilities in the surrounding communities designed for recreational riding. In Eugene, skate bowls are located at or near Amazon Park, Churchill High School, and Lane County Fair Grounds (availability depends upon scheduled events).
To help you have a safe and enjoyable ride, we offer the following recommendations for your equipment, and rules to abide by:
Equipment
Safety begins with your equipment. Some basic precautions and attention to details can help prevent injuries both to yourself and the people around you.
Wheels - Be sure your skates or skateboard are in good repair. The wheels should be in good repair, with the bearings free of grit and able to turn freely.
Helmet - Always wear a helmet - it could save your life. Make sure your helmet is free from cracks.
Pads - Like your helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards can be lifesavers -- wear them.
Clothing - It is very important to remain visible while skating across campus. Always wear bright and/or reflective clothing for maximum visibility.
Skating Rules
All skate and skateboard users must obey campus stop, yield, and dismount signs. On the University of Oregon campus, the use of skates and skateboards is permitted on paved roads designed for vehicular or bicycle traffic, provided you obey all traffic safety rules. This means that you must keep to the paved streets and marked bicycle paths/routes. No skating is allowed on walkways, sidewalks, loading docks, driveways, or access ramps unless specifically posted for this use.
Only the cautious use of skates and skateboards is permitted on University of Oregon property. No stunts or skating in buildings or structures are allowed. Always yield the right-of-way to pedestrians. These rules appear in the Oregon Administrative Rules, Chapter 571, Division 50, 571-50-020.
Violations
| Infraction | Fine |
| Failure to yield to a pedestrian | $29.00 |
| Failure to dismount and walk | $20.00 |
| Skating in a building or structure | $29.00 |
| Acrobatic or stunt skating | $34.00 |
If you are a student or a faculty/staff member at the UO, you are subject to institutional disciplinary proceedings as well as the fine. If you are not cited, then you may be required to take off the skates or dismount from the skateboard and immediately leave the premises and/or property controlled by the University of Oregon. Any authorized agent of the University can ask you to leave. Authorized agents include building managers, deans, department heads, and directors.
