Guaranteed Ride Home

A Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) Program serves as a key element in implementing a successful commuting program – in the case of the UO, it will serve as a cornerstone for expanding the current UO faculty/staff user base for alternative modes of transportation, such as: carpooling, LTD bus service, and bicycling. A GRH program offers riders a convenient and reliable mode of transportation -- alleviating much of the fear and anxiety from being unable to respond to an emergency (ill/injured child, family member, etc.) when using LTD or riding a bicycle instead of driving to the UO.

The benefit of a GRH program can be to increase the number of faculty/staff who use different commute options to come and go from the University, thereby reducing parking demand as well as improving environmental quality by reducing congestion, as well as reducing fuel consumption and air pollution.

How the program works:

  • A qualifying UO faculty/staff member is faced with an emergency regarding an immediate family member that requires the qualifying individual to leave UO
  • The qualifying UO faculty/staff member contacts DPS and advises they have an emergency and need to utilize the GRH program. An authorized member of DPS fills out the top half of the voucher form, keeping the pink copy of the NCR form for the files, and logs who, what, when, where on the GRH log sheet. DPS patrol personnel (normally a Parking Patrol Officer) deliver the voucher (white and yellow pages) to the qualifying UO faculty/staff member at their dept.
  • The qualifying UO faculty/staff member contacts an appropriate service provider from the following list:
Budget Taxi Airport Taxi Limousine Airport Ground Transportation
Airport Service Classic Cab Company Crown Cab
Eugene-Springfield Taxi McKenzie Cab Oregon Taxi
VIP Limo & Taxi Willamette Taxi Yellow Cab
  • The driver of the taxi is given the voucher to fill out. After the trip is completed (may require ferrying to multiple destinations such as pick-up child at school and then take home or to the doctor, etc.), the driver fills in the complete fare. Only at the completion of the entire trip does the driver fill this in and at this point the qualifying UO faculty/staff member must initial the fare (to ensure against abuse).
  • Voucher indicates to invoice DPS for the ride, and the transport company will submit the bill for payment.

A limit of a maximum of 4 vouchers per individual per academic year (10/01 through 09/30).
